Basalt vs Andesite: Colour, Minerals and Composition

Basalt and andesite are fine-grained volcanic rocks that overlap in colour, texture, and mineral content. Basalt is mafic and typically darker, richer in iron and magnesium, and more likely to contain olivine. Andesite is intermediate and often medium gray with plagioclase plus pyroxene or amphibole. Borderline basaltic andesite is common, so chemistry may be needed for a precise name. A very dark fine-grained rock with olivine or abundant pyroxene supports basalt. A medium-gray rock with conspicuous plagioclase and amphibole or pyroxene supports andesite. Colour and phenocrysts overlap, so use geologic context and chemistry when the classification matters. Examine a fresh surface rather than weathered rind and confirm the rock is fine grained or porphyritic. Estimate overall colour index across a representative area. Very dark, mafic material supports basalt but is not definitive. Use a hand lens to look for olivine and abundant clinopyroxene, which favour basalt, versus amphibole-rich intermediate assemblages that favour andesite. Record plagioclase phenocrysts, vesicles, and flow context without treating any one texture as diagnostic. Use whole-rock chemistry or petrography when a precise basalt, basaltic-andesite, or andesite boundary affects mapping or interpretation. Field colour is unreliable where glass content, oxidation, hydrothermal alteration, or weathering changes the rock. Basaltic andesite occupies the compositional boundary, and authoritative mapping may deliberately group basalt and andesite where field criteria are unreliable. Do not infer eruption hazard, rock strength, or engineering suitability from a photo-level basalt-versus-andesite identification.
