How to Identify Rocks and Minerals: A Field-Tested Guide

Begin rock and mineral identification with context and fresh surfaces, then compare several independent observations instead of relying on colour alone. For minerals, examine lustre, hardness, streak, cleavage or fracture, transparency, crystal form, magnetism, and relative heft. For rocks, examine grain size, texture, layering, vesicles, mineral proportions, and the relationships between grains. Record observations before testing, use the least destructive safe tests first, and compare multiple candidates. A visual or property match is educational guidance, not laboratory confirmation, assay, valuation, or safety clearance.
