GeoMiner's free mineral identification worksheet turns an unknown specimen into a structured evidence record. Start with a sample identifier, general location, geologic context, fresh existing surfaces, grain size, and whether the specimen is one mineral or a mixed-grain rock. Then record independent properties including colour, lustre, streak, hardness range, cleavage or fracture, crystal habit, magnetism, and relative heft. Write not tested instead of guessing. Compare at least two candidate minerals, record the strongest supporting evidence, note contradictory or missing observations, and choose the safest next test that could separate the candidates. Hardness is relative scratch resistance rather than toughness, loose powder is not a confirmed scratch, and an unknown specimen should never be tasted. Do not destructively test valuable, fragile, fibrous, dusty, radioactive, arsenic-, mercury-, or lead-bearing material.
