Free Rock, Mineral & Fossil Identifier

Use GeoMiner's free photo identifier to narrow an unknown rock, mineral, fossil, drill core, or thin section. Visitors can try one photo identification without an account; a free account provides more identifications and saved finds, and no credit card is required. Quick ID also works without an account or photo. Upload up to five images in bright, indirect light: show the whole specimen, a close-up, different natural surfaces or angles, and a coin or ruler for scale when practical. Photograph a fresh surface only when one already exists; do not break, grind, cut, or powder an unknown specimen just to improve an image. Optional observations such as texture, lustre, hardness, streak, cleavage, magnetism, density, and field context can help separate look-alikes. GeoMiner returns ranked candidates with calibrated confidence, visible reasons, commonly confused alternatives, basic geologic context, safety notes, and practical confirmation checks. A photo is still only a starting point. Weathering, coatings, lighting, scale, treatments, similar-looking materials, and hidden physical properties can all change the result, so consequential identifications may require several independent observations, a qualified geologist, or laboratory work. GeoMiner does not provide an appraisal, ore-grade or reserve assessment, laboratory determination, collecting permission, or safety clearance. Do not taste, burn, grind, or deliberately inhale dust from an unknown specimen. Photos, observations, and results can be kept as a private recovery draft on the visitor's device for up to seven days; when identification is requested, the selected photos and observations are sent to the identification service. Resetting the workflow clears the draft. Use Quick ID when no photo is available, then compare candidates with the field guide, printable chart, reference library, and methodology.
