Mineral Transparency Chart

Mineral transparency describes transmitted light, not surface colour or reflected-light lustre. A transparent portion passes light and recognizable detail, a translucent portion passes light but scatters detail, and an opaque portion passes no visible light under the observation conditions. Use a dry intact specimen and a thin edge that already exists. Place diffuse daylight or a small cool light behind the edge without heating or touching the specimen. Thickness, inclusions, fractures, impurities, coatings, alteration, weathering, and fine-grained aggregate texture can move one mineral between categories. Quartz, calcite, gypsum, corundum, and tourmaline can span transparent through opaque specimens; fluorite and halite commonly range from transparent to translucent; metallic magnetite, pyrite, galena, and common graphite hand specimens are opaque. Do not chip, split, polish, oil, or wet an unknown to create a clearer edge.
