Geode Identification Guide: Geode, Agate, or Concretion?
A confirmed geode has a hollow or partly hollow interior whose cavity is lined or partly filled by later mineral growth. A rounded shape, rough rind, low weight, rattle, or hollow sound cannot reveal the hidden interior of an unopened rock. Begin with provenance and the relationship to host rock. Sedimentary geodes can develop from precursor nodules or concretions whose interiors dissolved before groundwater deposited chalcedony, quartz, calcite, or other minerals. An agate or chalcedony nodule is commonly mostly solid and may show concentric or fortification-style silica bands. A concretion is a cemented body formed within sediment and is not defined by a crystal-lined cavity; some have septarian mineral-filled cracks or preserve fossils. In volcanic rock, a mineral-filled gas bubble is an amygdule, while repeated filled pockets produce an amygdaloidal texture. A vug is an irregular cavity still bounded by host rock. A thunderegg is a rounded volcanic structure associated with rhyolitic material and can be filled by agate, chalcedony, opal, or quartz; it may be solid, partly hollow, or geode-like. Bubbly glass, metallic blebs, flow textures, and industrial context support slag or manufactured material.
