Mineral Colour (Color) Chart
Mineral colour is an accessible starting observation, but it is rarely sufficient for identification. Quartz, calcite, fluorite, tourmaline, corundum, halite, and garnet can each occur in many colours, while unrelated minerals can share black, white, green, blue, red, yellow, brown, or colourless appearances. Trace elements, inclusions, structural defects, radiation, weathering, tarnish, coatings, and alteration can change colour. Use a dry, uncoated, existing surface in diffuse neutral light. Record one broad colour first, then note pale or dark intensity, zoning, banding, tarnish, coatings, and whether the colour belongs to one grain or a mixed rock. Do not wet, oil, polish, grind, scratch, chip, or break an unknown to improve its appearance.
