Conglomerate vs Breccia: Clast Shape and Origin

Conglomerate and breccia are coarse clastic rocks containing gravel-sized fragments larger than 2 millimetres. Their practical descriptive boundary is clast shape: conglomerate is dominated by rounded to subangular clasts, whereas breccia is dominated by angular to subangular fragments. The word breccia also spans sedimentary, fault, volcanic, collapse, impact, and hydrothermal origins, so angular fragments alone do not establish a depositional environment. Describe the clast population first, then use contacts, structures, matrix, and mapped setting to interpret origin. Confirm that gravel-sized clasts actually dominate, then examine many representative fragments. Predominantly rounded clasts support conglomerate; predominantly angular broken fragments support breccia. If roundness is mixed, report a breccia–conglomerate or mixed-rudite description and avoid inferring one transport distance or origin from shape alone. Photograph the rock or outcrop with scale and record bedding, contacts, faults, veins, volcanic units, collapse features, and whether the specimen is in place. Confirm that fragments larger than 2 millimetres are rock-forming clasts rather than crystals, vesicle fills, fossils, concretions, or a manufactured aggregate. Survey many representative clasts across more than one surface and record rounded, subrounded, subangular, and angular proportions. Record clast size range, sorting, composition, matrix or framework support, preferred orientation, grading, imbrication, cement, and cross-cutting relationships. Use roundness to choose the descriptive rock name, but use field relationships—not shape alone—to evaluate transport, faulting, eruption, collapse, impact, or alteration. For mapping, hazards, engineering, mineralization, or origin studies, seek a qualified geologist and use representative clast counts, petrography, and structural or stratigraphic evidence. Colour alone cannot distinguish conglomerate from breccia. Mixed clast populations are common, and classification thresholds vary, so describe representative roundness proportions. Angular fragments do not prove a sedimentary breccia. Fault, volcanic, collapse, impact, hydrothermal, and manufactured breccias require different field evidence.
