Granite vs Rhyolite: Grain Size and Felsic Composition
Granite and rhyolite occupy the same broad felsic compositional family in a simplified igneous chart. Granite is normally coarse grained because magma crystallized slowly underground. Rhyolite is normally fine grained because felsic lava or shallow magma cooled more quickly at or near the surface. Both may contain quartz and feldspar, and both can be porphyritic, so the groundmass texture is the most useful first separator. Inspect the groundmass with a hand lens. A coarse interlocking mosaic of quartz and feldspar supports granite. A fine felsic groundmass, sometimes with quartz or feldspar phenocrysts, flow banding, vesicles, or glass, supports rhyolite. Use the matrix around any phenocrysts and check field context before naming the rock. Confirm that a felsic igneous origin is plausible rather than assuming every pale quartz-bearing rock is granite or rhyolite. Inspect the typical groundmass on a fresh existing surface. Decide whether the major grains form a visible interlocking mosaic or a fine matrix. Identify any quartz and feldspar phenocrysts, then separately describe the material around them. Large crystals in fine matrix support porphyritic rhyolite. Look for flow banding, glassy patches, vesicles, volcanic fragments, chilled margins, or lava-flow context, which support a volcanic interpretation. Look for plutonic contacts, uniform coarse interlocking texture, dikes, veins, and mapped intrusive bodies, which support granite. Use thin-section petrography, modal mineral counts, or whole-rock chemistry when alteration, very fine texture, or a formal classification boundary prevents a reliable field name. Granite and rhyolite share a broad felsic composition, so quartz, feldspar, hardness, or pale colour alone cannot separate them. Porphyritic rhyolite can display large quartz and feldspar crystals. Judge the groundmass rather than classifying from phenocrysts alone. Volcanic glass, devitrification, alteration, welding, flow banding, and weathering can obscure rhyolite's original texture and colour. Do not break, grind, heat, or acid-test an unknown solely to expose texture. Formal fine-grained igneous classification may require a qualified geologist, petrography, or chemistry.
