Halite vs Calcite: Identify Without a Taste Test
Halite and calcite can both form clear or white crystals with three excellent cleavage directions. The cleavage angles are different: halite breaks into cubes with right-angle corners, while calcite breaks into slanted rhombohedra. Calcite effervesces in cool dilute acid; halite does not and is much more soluble in water. Do not taste an unknown sample. Look at cleavage: halite forms cubes with 90-degree corners, while calcite forms rhombs with non-right angles. Calcite bubbles in cool dilute acid; halite does not and dissolves much more readily in water. Inspect corners and cleavage fragments with a hand lens. Right-angle cubes favour halite; slanted rhombs favour calcite. Try a fingernail on an inconspicuous edge. Halite may scratch, while calcite usually resists. If permitted, place a tiny loose fragment in clean water and compare dissolution over time; do not wet a valuable specimen. If trained and equipped, use cool dilute acid on a separate clean area. Effervescence supports calcite. Confirm with geologic setting and do not use taste as an identification test. Never taste an unknown field, mine, laboratory, or teaching specimen; it may carry harmful contaminants or preservatives. Water and acid tests can permanently damage halite and collectible crystals. Use only a tiny expendable fragment. Wear eye protection and follow proper procedures whenever dilute acid is used.
