Marble vs Limestone: Crystals, Fossils and Texture
Most marble forms when limestone is metamorphosed, so both rocks may consist mainly of calcite and both commonly effervesce in dilute acid. The key difference is texture and fabric. Limestone may preserve fossils, grains, pores, or sedimentary bedding; marble is recrystallized into an interlocking mosaic that commonly obscures the original sedimentary features. Do not rely on acid alone because calcitic marble and limestone both fizz. Look closely for fossils, shell fragments, grains, pores, or bedding, which support limestone. A sugary or interlocking crystalline mosaic with erased fossils supports marble. Inspect a clean broken surface with a hand lens before using any chemical test. Look for fossils, shell fragments, ooids, mud-sized matrix, pores, or bedding; these sedimentary features support limestone. Look for an interlocking sugary mosaic of calcite crystals that cuts across or erases original features; this supports marble. Use cool dilute acid only to confirm carbonate, not to distinguish limestone from calcitic marble. Check outcrop context for bedding, metamorphic fabrics, nearby intrusions, or regional metamorphism. Acid response alone cannot separate calcitic limestone from calcitic marble; both may effervesce strongly. Fine-grained marble can resemble dense limestone, and partially metamorphosed limestone may preserve relict bedding or fossils. Use eye protection and proper procedures for dilute acid, and avoid damaging building stone or polished samples.
