Fossil Identification Guide

A fossil is evidence of past life in geologic context. Body fossils preserve an organism's shell, exoskeleton, bone, tooth, wood, leaf, or other body material; trace fossils preserve activity such as tracks, trails, burrows, borings, nests, root traces, or coprolites. A responsible identification begins by deciding whether a repeated structure is biological at all. Manganese dendrites, concretions, crystals, ripple marks, mud cracks, weathering patterns, artifacts, and recent biological material can imitate fossils. Broad group clues include a three-lobed segmented exoskeleton for a trilobite candidate; unequal valves with bilateral symmetry within each valve for a brachiopod; paired mirror valves for a bivalve; a single coiled shell for a gastropod; a chambered coiled or straight shell for an ammonoid or other cephalopod; repeated cups or corallites for coral; very fine colony pores for bryozoans; and discs with a central canal for crinoid columnals. Plant candidates may preserve veins, fronds, stems, wood structure, impressions, compressions, or carbon films. Preservation may include original or recrystallized hard material, molds, casts, permineralization, impressions, compressions, or carbon films. How can I tell if a rock contains a fossil?
Look for consistent biological structure such as shell symmetry, repeated body segments, bone texture, leaf veins, or a track or burrow that interacts with sediment. Compare mineral growth, concretions, sedimentary structures, artifacts, and recent material before deciding.
What is the difference between a body fossil and a trace fossil?
