Banded Rocks: Gneiss, Iron Formation and Layered Look-Alikes

Bands can form through several unrelated processes. Gneissic banding reflects metamorphic mineral segregation, sedimentary bedding records deposition, flow banding forms in moving magma or lava, and veins cut pre-existing rock. Start by deciding whether bands are compositional layers or later structures. Trace bands across the specimen or outcrop and note whether they are continuous, folded, broken, or cross-cutting. Compare minerals and grain size between light and dark bands. Look for foliation, aligned minerals, graded bedding, cross-bedding, or sharp vein walls. Record magnetic response, streak, and weathering only where they help test a specific candidate such as iron formation. Layering does not automatically make a rock sedimentary. A single pale vein is different from repeated compositional banding. Weathering can create colour bands that do not reflect the rock's original fabric.
