Black Metallic Minerals: Field Identification Guide

A black colour and metallic lustre point toward several ore and rock-forming minerals, but those two clues alone are not diagnostic. Magnetite, ilmenite, graphite, chromite, and some sulfides can overlap in appearance. Add at least two independent tests. Test magnetism before scratching: strong attraction is a major clue for magnetite or lodestone. Rub an inconspicuous fresh edge on an unglazed porcelain streak plate and record the powder colour. Compare heft with a similarly sized ordinary rock; many metallic ore minerals feel unusually dense. Check whether the specimen marks paper, shows cleavage, or breaks with an irregular fracture. Weathering coatings can make a non-metallic mineral look dark or dull. Graphite may look metallic but is very soft and commonly leaves a dark mark on paper. Do not grind, taste, or create dust from an unknown metallic mineral; some contain arsenic, lead, or other hazardous elements.
