Blue Minerals: Azurite, Kyanite, Sodalite and Look-Alikes

Blue minerals are memorable but diverse. Azurite, kyanite, sodalite, lazurite, celestine, turquoise, and blue varieties of other minerals form in very different settings. Decide whether the blue colour belongs to discrete crystals, a massive mineral, a coating, or an altered zone before naming it. Observe the hue in neutral daylight and note whether it is pale, sky blue, royal blue, blue-green, or violet-blue. Describe habit and texture, including blades, tabular crystals, granular masses, veins, crusts, or disseminated grains. Compare hardness, cleavage, and streak with a documented method appropriate for the specimen. Use the host rock and associated minerals to test whether a copper, metamorphic, evaporitic, or alkaline-rock setting is plausible. Phone cameras and cool artificial lighting can shift grey, green, and violet materials toward blue. Paint, dye, weathering films, and copper-bearing coatings may colour only the surface. Trade names and colour varieties do not replace a mineral-species identification.
