Foliated Metamorphic Rocks: Slate, Phyllite, Schist and Gneiss
Foliation is a planar metamorphic fabric produced by aligned minerals, compositional segregation, or both. Slate, phyllite, schist, and gneiss are not distinguished by colour alone; grain size, fabric type, mineral visibility, and field relationships form the practical sequence. Estimate grain size and whether individual mica or other metamorphic minerals are visible without magnification. Check whether the rock splits along flat slaty cleavage, has a silky phyllitic sheen, shows schistose mineral alignment, or contains gneissic bands. Look for folds, lineations, porphyroblasts, relict bedding, and relationships between foliation and compositional layers. Record the surrounding metamorphic unit and avoid assigning metamorphic grade from one loose specimen alone. Sedimentary bedding, igneous flow banding, and closely spaced fractures can resemble metamorphic foliation. Weathering may hide mica sheen or exaggerate splitting surfaces; freshly split slate can have sharp edges, so use appropriate hand and eye protection. The slate-to-phyllite-to-schist-to-gneiss sequence is useful but does not describe every protolith, pressure-temperature path, or metamorphic rock.
