Glassy Rocks: Obsidian, Volcanic Glass and Slag

A glassy texture forms when melt cools too quickly for abundant crystals to grow, but natural volcanic glass is frequently confused with industrial glass and slag. Obsidian, pitchstone, tachylite, welded material, and human-made glass require context as well as appearance. Look for conchoidal fracture, sharp edges, flow banding, perlitic cracks, microlites, or small mineral inclusions. Describe colour, translucency at thin edges, vesicle abundance, and weathered surface texture. Inspect the site for lava, tuff, volcanic fragments, furnace waste, fill, rail ballast, or other human-made context. Compare several pieces from the locality before assigning a natural rock name. Broken bottle glass and furnace slag are common obsidian look-alikes, especially near roads, railways, and historic industrial sites. Fresh glassy edges can be extremely sharp; wear eye protection and cut-resistant gloves where handling procedures require them. A dark colour does not prove a basaltic composition, and a specimen cannot be called a meteorite from glassy appearance alone.
