Ablation identification and geology
The process by which ice and snow are removed from a glacier or snowfield, primarily through melting, evaporation, sublimation, or calving. Ablation is the counterpart to accumulation; the balance between the two determines whether a glacier advances, retreats, or remains in equilibrium. The ablation zone is the lower portion of a glacier where mass loss exceeds mass gain. Field: glacial geology. Example: The ablation zone of the Athabasca Glacier in the Canadian Rockies has retreated over 1.5 km since 1844 due to increased summer ablation outpacing winter accumulation..
