Craton identification and geology
A stable, ancient portion of continental lithosphere that has remained relatively undeformed since the Precambrian, typically older than 1.5 billion years. Cratons form the nuclei of continents and consist of a crystalline basement shield where exposed at the surface and a platform where covered by younger, flat-lying sedimentary rocks . They are underlain by thick, cool, buoyant lithospheric roots that contribute to their long-term stability. Field: structural geology. Example: The Canadian Shield, the exposed portion of the North American craton, contains some of the oldest rocks on Earth 4.0 Ga Acasta Gneiss and hosts major nickel, copper, and gold deposits..
