Ductile deformation identification and geology
Permanent deformation of rock that occurs without fracturing, through mechanisms such as crystal-plastic flow, dislocation creep, diffusion creep, and grain-boundary sliding. Ductile deformation is favored by high temperature, high confining pressure, slow strain rates, and the presence of fluids—conditions typically found at depth in the Earth's crust generally 10–15 km . It produces structures such as folds, foliation, and mylonites. Field: structural geology. Example: Quartzite in the Moine Thrust Zone of Scotland has been intensely deformed by ductile shearing, producing mylonites with stretched quartz grains and aligned mica that record the deformation conditions at depth during the Caledonian orogeny..
