Lava tube identification and geology

A natural tunnel formed within a lava flow when the outer surface solidifies and insulates the interior, allowing the still-molten lava to continue flowing and eventually drain out, leaving a hollow tube. Lava tubes can extend for tens of kilometers and are common in fluid basaltic lava flows. They are efficient heat-preserving conduits that allow lava to travel great distances from the vent.
