Orogeny identification and geology
A major mountain-building event caused by tectonic forces, typically involving folding, faulting, metamorphism, and igneous activity over millions of years. Orogenies result from the collision of tectonic plates—continent-continent collisions e.g., Himalayan , continent-arc collisions, and arc-arc collisions. Each orogeny produces a characteristic structural, metamorphic, and magmatic signature in the rock record. Field: structural geology. Example: The Himalayan orogeny, caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates beginning approximately 50 million years ago, has produced the highest mountains on Earth and is still ongoing today..
