Overburden identification and geology
The material overlying a useful geological deposit, including soil, sediment, and rock that must be removed to access the resource beneath. In mining, overburden removal stripping is a major cost factor, and the stripping ratio volume of overburden to volume of ore determines whether open-pit mining is economically viable. In engineering geology, overburden refers to any unconsolidated material above bedrock. Field: economic geology. Example: The oil sands operations in northern Alberta must remove up to 75 m of overburden muskeg, glacial till, and shale to access the bitumen-bearing McMurray Formation in surface-mining operations..
