Pyroclastic identification and geology
Pertaining to fragmental material ejected from a volcanic vent during an explosive eruption, including ash <2 mm , lapilli 2–64 mm , and bombs/blocks 64 mm . Pyroclastic flows hot, fast-moving currents of gas and volcanic debris are among the most deadly volcanic hazards. Pyroclastic deposits lithify into tuff from ash or ignimbrite from pyroclastic flow deposits . Field: volcanology. Example: The pyroclastic flows from the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under meters of hot ash and pumice, preserving them in extraordinary detail..
