Replacement deposit identification and geology
An ore deposit formed when pre-existing rock is dissolved and simultaneously replaced by ore and gangue minerals precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. The replacement process preserves the external form and texture of the original rock while completely changing its composition. Replacement is most effective in reactive rocks such as limestone and dolomite, producing skarns and carbonate-hosted base metal deposits. Field: economic geology. Example: The massive sulfide replacement bodies at Leadville, Colorado, formed when hydrothermal fluids replaced dolomite with sphalerite, galena, and silver minerals, producing one of the richest silver-lead-zinc districts in the American West..
