Superposition identification and geology
The principle that in an undisturbed sedimentary sequence, the oldest layers lie at the bottom and the youngest at the top. This is one of the most fundamental principles in geology, first articulated by Nicolaus Steno in 1669, and forms the basis for establishing relative age relationships in sedimentary and volcanic rock sequences. The principle does not apply where tectonic activity has overturned the strata. Field: stratigraphy. Example: Applying the principle of superposition to the layered sedimentary rocks exposed in the walls of the Grand Canyon, geologists established that the Kaibab Limestone at the rim is the youngest formation and the Vishnu Schist at the river level is the oldest..
