Transform fault identification and geology
A plate boundary along which two tectonic plates slide horizontally past each other, with no net creation or destruction of lithosphere. Transform faults connect offset segments of mid-ocean ridges oceanic transforms or accommodate relative plate motion on land continental transforms . They are characterized by shallow, often powerful earthquakes along their length. Field: structural geology. Example: The Alpine Fault in New Zealand is a continental transform fault accommodating the relative motion between the Pacific and Australian plates, with a history of producing major earthquakes every 200–300 years..
