A common phyllosilicate mineral known for its perfect basal cleavage, allowing it to be split into thin, flexible, transparent sheets. Essential component of many igneous and metamorphic rocks. Color: Colorless to pale brown, green. Luster: Vitreous to pearly. Streak: White. Cleavage: Perfect basal 1 direction. Hardness: 2-2.5. Transparency: Transparent to translucent. Crystal system: Monoclinic. Chemical formula: KAl₂ AlSi₃O₁₀ OH ₂. Specific gravity: 2.8-2.9. Formation: Crystallizes from silica and aluminum-rich magmas or forms during regional metamorphism of aluminous sediments. Common geological settings: Found in granites, pegmatites, schists, and gneisses. Common in sediments as a detrital mineral due to its resistance to weathering.
