Unusual high-magnesium, low-titanium volcanic rock found exclusively in forearc settings of subduction zones. Texture: Porphyritic to aphanitic. Rock type: Igneous Extrusive. Grain size: Fine. Minerals present: Orthopyroxene, Clinopyroxene, Olivine, Chromite. Formation: Erupts in forearc settings from melting of highly depleted mantle fluxed by slab-derived fluids. Common geological settings: Bonin Islands Japan , Mariana Arc, Troodos Cyprus ; found in forearc volcanic sequences. Common look-alikes and related entries: Basalt, Andesite, Komatiite.
