Deep blue metamorphic rock prized since antiquity. Composed of lazurite, calcite, and pyrite. Texture: Massive, granular. Rock type: Metamorphic Contact. Grain size: Fine to medium. Parent rock: Impure limestone. Minerals present: Lazurite, Calcite, Pyrite, Sodalite, Hauyne. Formation: Forms by contact metamorphism of impure limestone with introduction of sulfur-bearing silica-rich fluids. Common geological settings: Afghanistan Sar-e-Sang , Chile, Russia, Myanmar; formed in metamorphosed limestones. Common look-alikes and related entries: Sodalite rock, Azurite, Dumortierite quartzite.
