Field Dehydration and Heat identification and geology
Heat stress can cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Risk increases with heavy work, high humidity, direct sun, and poor acclimatization. Early signs can include strong thirst, headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Prevent heat illness with water, breaks, shade, and pacing. Plan harder work for cooler times and watch each other for symptoms. This guidance is educational and is not a substitute for your employer's or site's safety training and rules. Do list: Drink water often, before you feel thirsty, Take regular cooling breaks in shade or AC, Use buddy checks for heat symptoms, Start with lighter work when first arriving on site, Keep a clear plan for medical evacuation. Dont list: Do not ignore early symptoms, Do not rely on energy drinks or alcohol for hydration, Do not work through peak heat without breaks, Do not leave sick workers alone, Do not drive long distances if you are heat-stressed or dizzy. First aid: Move the person to shade or a cool place. Loosen clothing and cool with water, wet cloths, or fans. Provide small sips of water if they are alert. Call emergency services for confusion, fainting, or suspected heat stroke.. Regulations: Follow workplace heat stress programs where required. Use recognized guidance for hot environments and first aid. In Canada, follow provincial OHS rules and site heat stress plans. Where applicable, refer to OSHA/MSHA heat illness prevention guidance.. Hazard level: high. Ppe required: wide-brim hat or hard hat sun shield, sun protection SPF, lightweight long sleeves, electrolytes as needed. Common geological settings: Summer field mapping, open pits, drill sites, long hikes, ATV travel, and core sheds with poor ventilation.
