Specimen Labeling and Storage for Hazardous Materials identification and geology
Clear labeling prevents accidental exposure. Minerals that contain asbestos, arsenic, lead, mercury, or radioactivity can be handled safely if everyone knows what they are. Poor labeling leads to risky handling, contamination of common storage areas, and unsafe transport. Store hazardous specimens sealed, separated, and clearly marked with hazards and basic handling rules. Keep them out of living areas and away from food. For shipping, check rules before sending and use approved packaging when required. This guidance is educational and is not a substitute for your employer's or site's safety training and rules. Do list: Use durable labels with sample ID, date, and hazard warnings, Double-bag dusty or friable specimens, Keep a separate storage bin for hazardous samples, Store away from heat sources and living spaces, Keep an inventory list so hazards are known and traceable. Dont list: Do not store hazardous samples in lunch rooms, vehicles, or bunkhouses, Do not ship specimens without checking TDG and courier rules, Do not mix unknown samples with known safe samples, Do not remove labels once applied, Do not store leaking or damaged containers. First aid: If a mislabeled specimen causes exposure, stop work and isolate the item. Wash hands and exposed skin, and flush eyes if needed. Report the incident and follow SDS/site response steps.. Regulations: Follow WHMIS/SDS for workplace labeling. For transport in Canada, follow Transportation of Dangerous Goods TDG rules when applicable, and follow any site chain-of-custody and waste policies. Where applicable, refer to OSHA/MSHA hazard communication requirements.. Hazard level: moderate. Ppe required: nitrile gloves, safety glasses, sealed sample bags or containers, labels hazard + ID. Common geological settings: Core shacks, university labs, teaching collections, sample rooms, field trucks, and any program transporting samples to labs or storage.
