Convert map distance to ground distance, work backward from ground distance to map distance, or derive a representative fraction from a matched pair. A scale written 1:N means one unit on the map represents N of the same units on the ground. At 1:24,000, one map inch represents 24,000 ground inches, equal to 2,000 feet. At 1:50,000, one map centimetre represents 50,000 centimetres, equal to 500 metres. To calculate ground distance, convert the map measurement to a common length unit and multiply it by the denominator. To calculate map distance, convert ground distance to the same base unit and divide by the denominator. To derive scale, divide ground distance by map distance only after both describe the same interval and use the same unit. Large-scale and small-scale language describes the fraction, not the printed sheet dimensions: 1:24,000 is larger scale than 1:100,000 and normally shows a smaller area with more detail. A declared representative fraction remains valid only at the intended physical reproduction size. Fit-to-page printing, screenshots, scanning, display zoom, image resampling, PDF export, and document resizing can change it. Verify a graphic scale or known grid interval on the actual copy; an on-screen ruler is not enough without display and document calibration. A digital map also has compilation scale, resolution, positional accuracy, projection, datum, and feature-generalization limits that zoom cannot improve. A ruler measures the geometry traced. Straight-line endpoints do not equal a curved road, trail, river, contact, boundary, drill trace, or three-dimensional surface route. Map projection distortion, paper stretch, line width, operator technique, terrain, map age, source accuracy, and generalization affect the result.
