Convert map distance to ground distance, work backward from ground distance to map distance, or derive a representative fraction from a matched pair. A scale written 1:N means one unit on the map represents N of the same units on the ground. At 1:24,000, one map inch represents 24,000 ground inches, equal to 2,000 feet. At 1:50,000, one map centimetre represents 50,000 centimetres, equal to 500 metres. To calculate ground distance, convert the map measurement to a common length unit and multiply it by the denominator. To calculate map distance, convert ground distance to the same base unit and divide by the denominator. To derive scale, divide ground distance by map distance only after both describe the same interval and use the same unit.
