Introduction to Mineralogy

Mineralogy is the scientific study of minerals - naturally occurring, inorganic solids with a definite chemical composition and crystalline structure. Understanding minerals is fundamental to geology, mining, and many other earth sciences. What is a Mineral? A mineral must meet five criteria: 1. Naturally occurring - formed by geological processes, not manufactured 2. Inorganic - not produced by living organisms with some exceptions like calcite in shells 3. Solid - has a definite shape and volume at normal temperatures 4. Definite chemical composition - can be expressed by a chemical formula 5. Ordered internal structure - atoms arranged in a regular, repeating pattern crystalline Why Study Minerals? Minerals are the building blocks of rocks and are essential for: - Economic geology : Finding valuable ore deposits - Environmental science : Understanding soil composition and contamination - Construction : Selecting appropriate building materials - Everyday life : From toothpaste fluoride minerals to electronics quartz, rare earth elements The Major Mineral Groups There are over 5,000 known minerals, but most rocks are composed of just 20-30 common "rock-forming" minerals. The major groups include: - Silicates : Quartz, feldspars, micas, pyroxenes, amphiboles make up 90% of Earth's crust - Carbonates : Calcite, dolomite - Oxides : Hematite, magnetite - Sulfides : Pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite - Sulfates : Gypsum, barite - Native Elements : Gold, silver, copper, sulfur In the following lessons, we'll learn systematic methods to identify these minerals in the field and laboratory.
