Isostatic Rebound

Isostatic Rebound Isostatic rebound also called post-glacial rebound or glacial isostatic adjustment is one of the most dramatic ongoing geological processes in Canada. It is the slow rising of land that was previously depressed under the enormous weight of ice sheets. What Is Isostasy? Isostasy is the principle that Earth's crust "floats" on the denser, semi-fluid mantle below, much like a boat floats on water: - Add weight like an ice sheet → the crust sinks deeper into the mantle - Remove weight ice melts → the crust slowly rises back up - The crust seeks an equilibrium position based on its mass The Mechanism During the Last Glacial Maximum: 1. The Laurentide Ice Sheet was up to 3–4 km thick over Hudson Bay 2. This enormous weight depressed the crust by 300+ metres 3. Mantle material was pushed outward from beneath the loaded area creating a "forebulge" around the ice margin When the ice melted 19,000–6,500 years ago : 1. The weight was removed 2. Mantle material began flowing back beneath the formerly loaded area 3. The crust began slowly rising — a process that continues today Where Is Rebound Happening? The fastest rebound in Canada is occurring around Hudson Bay , where the ice was thickest and lasted longest: | Location | Rebound Rate | |----------|-------------| | Hudson Bay central | 10 mm/year 1 m/century | | James Bay | 8–10 mm/year | | Northern Ontario | 5–8 mm/year | | St. Lawrence | 1–3 mm/year | | Maritimes | Slight subsidence forebulge collapse | Evidence for Rebound Raised Beaches - Ancient shorelines are now found far above current sea level - Around Hudson Bay, beaches that formed at sea level 8,000 years ago are now 100+ metres above the current shoreline GPS Measurements - Precise GPS stations across Canada continuously measure vertical land motion - The data confirm ongoing uplift centred on Hudson Bay Gravity Anomalies - NASA's GRACE satellites measured a persistent gravity low over Hudson Bay - This is because the mantle has not yet fully returned beneath the formerly loaded crust — there is literally less mass under Hudson Bay than expected - This gravity anomaly is direct evidence that rebound is not yet complete Future Rebound Scientists estimate that Hudson Bay has approximately 100–150 metres of rebound remaining before it reaches full isostatic equilibrium.
