Sedimentary Basins & Resources While the Canadian Shield hosts hard-rock mineral deposits, Canada's sedimentary basins contain enormous reserves of oil, gas, potash, and other resources. These basins represent hundreds of millions of years of sediment accumulation. Western Canada Sedimentary Basin WCSB The WCSB is one of the world's major petroleum-producing basins: - Extends from the Rocky Mountain foothills eastward across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and into Manitoba - Contains sedimentary rocks from Cambrian to Tertiary age 540–2 million years old - Up to 6 km of sediment accumulated in the basin - The sediments were eroded from mountains to the west and deposited in ancient seas and coastal environments Conventional Oil and Gas - Alberta's conventional oil and gas come from porous reservoir rocks sandstones, carbonates sealed by impermeable cap rocks shales - The Leduc reef discovery in 1947 launched Alberta's petroleum industry - Devonian-age reefs 375–360 Ma are major reservoir rocks — these were ancient tropical reefs, similar to modern coral reefs Athabasca Oil Sands The Athabasca Oil Sands in northeastern Alberta are one of the world's largest petroleum resources: - Contain an estimated 1.7 trillion barrels of bitumen heavy oil - About 165 billion barrels are considered recoverable with current technology - The bitumen is hosted in Cretaceous-age sandstones 110 million years old - The oil sands formed when conventional oil migrated into porous sandstone and lost its lighter components Saskatchewan's Potash Saskatchewan contains the world's largest reserves of potash potassium salts : - Deposited during the Devonian period 380 Ma when an ancient inland sea evaporated - The Prairie Evaporite formation lies 1,000–1,200 metres below the surface - Saskatchewan produces about 30% of the world's potash - Potash is essential for agricultural fertilisers Hudson Bay Basin The Hudson Bay Basin is a large sedimentary basin underlying Hudson Bay: - Contains Paleozoic sedimentary rocks limestone, dolostone, sandstone - Less explored than the WCSB due to its remote location - Potential for oil, gas, and evaporite minerals Other Notable Basins | Basin | Location | Key Resources | |-------|----------|--------------| | Williston Basin | Saskatchewan/Manitoba | Oil, potash | | Sverdrup Basin | Arctic Islands | Oil and gas potential | | Maritimes Basin | Atlantic Canada |
