Agate vs Chalcedony: Banding, Structure and Naming
Agate is not a separate mineral from chalcedony. It is a banded variety within the broader chalcedony family of fibrous cryptocrystalline silica. A specimen can therefore be both chalcedony and agate. Repeated internal bands are the central agate clue, while unbanded, uniformly coloured, botryoidal, or massive material may be described more broadly as chalcedony or by another accepted variety name. Look for repeated internal banding that follows a cavity, forms fortification patterns, or alternates in colour, translucency, or texture. That supports the more specific name agate. If the material has chalcedony's fine fibrous, waxy, translucent character but lacks diagnostic bands, call it chalcedony unless another documented variety name applies. Record whether the material is in a cavity, vein, nodule, replacement, loose pebble, cut stone, bead, or commercial product. Inspect all available natural, broken, or polished surfaces with a hand lens and strong diffuse light; do not create a new cut solely for naming. Trace repeated bands through the specimen. Cavity-parallel, fortification, eye, or rhythmic bands support agate rather than generic chalcedony. Check an existing thin edge for changes in translucency, colour, and texture across the bands, while recognizing that weathering or polish can hide them. If classic bands are absent, document fibrous, botryoidal, mossy, plume, dendritic, or uniform features and use chalcedony or a qualified variety name. For valuable, treated, dyed, assembled, or ambiguous material, seek a qualified gemologist and appropriate microscopy, refractive-index, spectroscopy, or other laboratory testing. All agate is chalcedony in the broad naming hierarchy, so a result can legitimately be both. The useful question is whether agate is the justified more specific name. Hardness, conchoidal fracture, waxy lustre, and a white streak overlap and cannot distinguish agate from other chalcedony. Trade names are inconsistent. Dye, impregnation, heat, composites, coatings, and misleading variety names can change appearance without changing the underlying identification question. Do not break, dry-grind, or cut an unknown or valuable specimen merely to expose bands. Silica dust is hazardous, and lapidary work requires wet methods, guarding, and suitable respiratory controls.
