Agate vs Jasper: Banding, Opacity and Texture
Agate and jasper are closely related silica materials commonly grouped with chalcedony or cryptocrystalline quartz. Their hardness and fracture can be nearly identical, so a scratch test does not separate them. Agate is generally translucent and characteristically banded, often recording successive silica layers in a cavity. Jasper is generally opaque because of abundant mineral inclusions and may be uniform, spotted, brecciated, or patterned. Natural transitions and inconsistent trade names make some specimens genuinely ambiguous. Use a strong light on a thin edge and inspect the pattern across a fresh or polished surface. Translucent material with repeated internal bands supports agate. Opaque, inclusion-rich material with patchy, spotted, or massive colour supports jasper. Hardness alone cannot decide because both are silica-rich and commonly near Mohs 6.5 to 7. Clean the surface with water and use a hand lens; dirt, polish, or weathering can hide fine bands and inclusions. Hold only an existing thin edge in front of a strong diffuse light. Widespread translucency supports agate; persistent opacity supports jasper. Trace the pattern through the specimen. Repeated cavity-parallel or fortification bands favour agate, while irregular inclusion-controlled colour favours jasper. Check whether translucent and opaque zones occur together. Record mixed agate-jasper material rather than forcing one name on the entire specimen. Use locality, host rock, lapidary cross sections, or microscopy when a precise varietal name matters. Hardness, streak, and conchoidal fracture usually confirm silica-rich material but do not reliably separate agate from jasper. Commercial names are inconsistent, and some products sold as jasper are different rock types. Colour, pattern, or a seller's label is not a mineralogical verification. Do not break, grind, or cut an unknown or valuable piece merely to name it. Silica dust is hazardous, and lapidary work requires wet methods, guarding, and appropriate respiratory controls.
