Porphyritic Rocks: How to Identify Phenocrysts and Groundmass
A porphyritic rock contains conspicuously larger crystals, called phenocrysts, in a finer-grained groundmass. The texture records more than one stage or condition of crystallization, but it does not by itself determine composition. Identify the phenocrysts and groundmass separately before naming the rock. Estimate the percentage, size range, shape, and distribution of the larger crystals. Identify likely phenocryst minerals using cleavage, hardness, habit, and alteration while keeping uncertainty explicit. Describe whether the groundmass is glassy, aphanitic, visibly crystalline, vesicular, or strongly altered. Use contacts, flow features, dikes, plutonic relationships, and regional mapping to decide which rock name is justified. Fragments in a clastic rock and porphyroblasts in a metamorphic rock can resemble igneous phenocrysts. Alteration can replace feldspar or mafic phenocrysts and obscure the original composition. Porphyry is a textural field term in many contexts; it does not automatically indicate a porphyry copper deposit. Use an existing safe surface where possible rather than hammering unknown material or creating unnecessary rock dust.
