Stratigraphy identification and geology
The branch of geology concerned with the study of rock layers strata and their arrangement in time and space, including their distribution, composition, sequence, age relationships, and correlation across geographic areas. Stratigraphy uses principles such as superposition, original horizontality, lateral continuity, and cross-cutting relationships to establish the relative ages of rock units. It is fundamental to geological mapping, resource exploration, and Earth history reconstruction. Field: stratigraphy. Example: The stratigraphic column of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin records a nearly continuous sequence of sedimentary deposition from the Cambrian to the Cenozoic, hosting the majority of Canada's oil, gas, and potash resources..
