Subduction identification and geology

The process by which one tectonic plate descends beneath another into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary. Typically, denser oceanic lithosphere subducts beneath less dense continental or oceanic lithosphere. Subduction generates the world's deepest earthquakes, produces volcanic arcs through partial melting of the descending slab or overlying mantle wedge, and is responsible for recycling oceanic crust back into the mantle. Example: The Cascadia subduction zone off the Pacific Northwest coast, where the Juan de Fuca plate subducts beneath North America, produced a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in 1700 and remains capable of generating similar megathrust events..
