Plate tectonics identification and geology
The unifying theory of Earth science stating that the Earth's outer shell lithosphere is divided into a number of rigid plates that move relative to one another on the partially molten asthenosphere below. Plate interactions at their boundaries—divergent spreading , convergent colliding , and transform sliding past —produce the vast majority of earthquakes, volcanism, mountain building, and ocean basin formation observed on Earth. Field: structural geology. Example: The theory of plate tectonics, developed in the 1960s, elegantly explains why earthquakes and volcanoes are concentrated along narrow belts—they coincide with the boundaries of the dozen or so major lithospheric plates..
