Acid Test Chemical Safety identification and geology
Acid tests often dilute hydrochloric acid are common in field geology to identify carbonates. Even weak acids can burn skin and eyes, and acid can react with some materials to release irritating fumes. Poor storage and unlabeled bottles increase risk in trucks and backpacks. Use minimal volumes, keep acids in secondary containment, and label clearly. Rinse exposures fast with clean water and follow the SDS for the product used. Do list: Use a small dropper bottle and keep the cap closed, Label the bottle with contents and hazards, Store acids upright in a sealed secondary container, Use the test downwind and away from faces, Carry a small water bottle for immediate rinsing. Dont list: Do not store acid in drink bottles, Do not mix acids with other chemicals in the field, Do not test in enclosed spaces without ventilation, Do not leave acids in hot vehicles without proper containment, Do not handle acids without eye protection. First aid: If on skin, rinse with clean water for at least 15 minutes and remove contaminated clothing. If in eyes, flush with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical care. If fumes are inhaled, move to fresh air and seek care if symptoms persist.. Regulations: Follow WHMIS/SDS and employer chemical handling rules. Where applicable, refer to OSHA/MSHA chemical safety standards and site spill procedures.. Hazard level: moderate. Ppe required: safety glasses or chemical splash goggles, nitrile gloves, long sleeves. Common geological settings: Field mapping kits, core logging desks, carbonate host rocks, and any place acids are carried in vehicles or backpacks.
