Arsenic-Bearing Minerals identification and geology
Some sulphide minerals and arsenic minerals can expose workers to arsenic through dust or poor hygiene. Risk rises during cutting, crushing, or when handling oxidized, dusty specimens. Small amounts can be taken in by breathing dust or by hand-to-mouth contact. Use good hygiene and control dust. Keep samples sealed, wash hands, and avoid eating or drinking near samples. Use gloves and a respirator when dust can be generated. This guidance is educational and is not a substitute for your employer's or site's safety training and rules. Do list: Keep specimens sealed or double-bagged when transporting, Work wet when cutting or grinding to reduce dust, Wash hands before eating, drinking, or smoking, Label arsenic-bearing samples clearly, Use designated clean areas for food and water. Dont list: Do not dry crush or grind without controls, Do not store arsenic-bearing samples in living areas, Do not eat or drink at the sample bench, Do not blow dust off samples or clothing, Do not mix unlabeled samples together. First aid: If dust is inhaled, move to fresh air. If on skin, wash with soap and water. If in eyes, flush with clean water for at least 15 minutes. If ingestion is suspected or symptoms occur nausea, dizziness , call local poison control and seek urgent medical advice.. Regulations: Follow WHMIS/SDS and employer exposure control plans. Where applicable, refer to OSHA/MSHA chemical exposure requirements and safe handling rules.. Hazard level: high. Ppe required: nitrile gloves, fit-tested N95/P100 respirator when dust possible, safety goggles, lab coat or work coveralls. Common geological settings: Sulphide-rich core, oxidized gossans, historic mine dumps, sampling prep areas, and any cutting/grinding of arsenopyrite-bearing rock.
