Dust Inhalation Prevention identification and geology
Rock dust can contain respirable crystalline silica and other harmful particles. Cutting, grinding, brushing dry core, and sweeping floors can put fine dust in the air. Breathing this dust can harm lungs over time, and the risk increases with repeated exposure. Control dust at the source using wet methods, local ventilation, and HEPA vacuum cleanup instead of dry sweeping. Respirators should be selected based on hazard and exposure level, and should fit properly. Do list: Use wet cutting or wet wiping to keep dust down, Use HEPA-filter vacuums for cleanup, Keep core damp while brushing to reduce dust, Use a respirator program selection, fit, care, Wash hands and face before eating or drinking. Dont list: Do not dry sweep dusty core sheds, Do not use compressed air to blow dust off core or clothing, Do not cut or grind without dust controls, Do not reuse disposable respirators past their safe use, Do not eat or drink in dusty work areas. First aid: Move to fresh air. Rinse mouth and blow nose. If coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or asthma symptoms occur, seek medical care. If eye exposure occurs, flush with clean water for at least 15 minutes.. Regulations: For silica dust, refer to OSHA respirable crystalline silica rules where applicable and site exposure control plans. In Canada, follow provincial OHS requirements, WHMIS/SDS, and CSA Z94.4 for respirator programs.. Hazard level: high. Ppe required: fit-tested N95/P100 respirator, safety glasses or goggles, hearing protection when cutting/grinding, work gloves. Common geological settings: Core sheds, saw rooms, sampling areas, outcrops with hammering, drill sites, and anywhere core is brushed, cut, or ground.
