Cold Stress and Hypothermia identification and geology
Cold exposure can lead to frostbite and hypothermia, especially with wind, wet clothing, and long field days. Cold also reduces coordination, which increases the chance of slips and tool injuries. Early warning signs include numbness, shivering, confusion, and poor decision-making. Prevent cold stress with layered clothing, wind-resistant outer layers, keeping dry, and planned warming breaks. Have a shelter plan and keep extra gloves and socks available. This guidance is educational and is not a substitute for your employer's or site's safety training and rules. Do list: Dress in layers and keep spare dry clothing available, Use warming breaks and shelters in cold/windy conditions, Keep hands and feet protected and dry, Watch for early frostbite signs numb, pale skin, Plan travel with extra time and emergency gear. Dont list: Do not ignore confusion or slurred speech possible hypothermia, Do not drink alcohol to warm up, Do not rub frostbitten skin, Do not let wet clothing stay on for long, Do not split the team without a check-in plan in extreme cold. First aid: Move the person to a warm, dry shelter. Remove wet clothing and warm gradually with blankets and warm not hot fluids if alert. Do not rub frostbitten areas. Seek urgent medical care for confusion, severe shivering, or frostbite.. Regulations: Follow cold-environment control measures and work/warm-up schedules in safety programs. In Canada, follow provincial OHS requirements and site cold stress plans.. Hazard level: high. Ppe required: insulated boots, layered clothing system, wind-resistant outer shell, insulated gloves or mitts, hat and neck covering. Common geological settings: Winter drilling programs, tundra work, windy ridgelines, lake travel, helicopter-supported programs, and any site with wet snow or freezing rain.
