Handling Asbestos Minerals identification and geology
Some minerals and rocks can release asbestos fibres when disturbed. This can happen when dry core is brushed, when soft fibrous material is broken, or when dust is created by cutting and grinding. Fibre exposure is a serious long-term health hazard because fibres can lodge in the lungs. Avoid creating dust and fibres. Use wet methods, controlled handling, and proper respiratory protection when asbestos is suspected. Bag and label suspect material and follow site rules for disposal. This guidance is educational and is not a substitute for your employer's or site's safety training and rules. Do list: Treat unknown fibrous material as suspect until confirmed, Use wet methods and gentle handling, Isolate, bag, and label suspect samples, Use a respirator program fit testing, care, Clean with HEPA methods not sweeping. Dont list: Do not dry brush or grind suspect asbestos material, Do not use compressed air on dusty material, Do not take suspect material home, Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the work area, Do not remove respirators until you are in a clean area. First aid: If fibres/dust are released, stop work and leave the area. Move to fresh air. Wash exposed skin with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing carefully and bag it. Report to the supervisor and follow site exposure response steps.. Regulations: Follow asbestos control programs and regulated work procedures. In Canada, follow provincial asbestos rules and WHMIS/SDS. Where applicable, refer to OSHA and MSHA requirements and any site asbestos management plan.. Hazard level: critical. Ppe required: fit-tested P100 respirator, disposable coveralls, nitrile gloves, sealed safety goggles. Common geological settings: Serpentinized ultramafic rocks, some metamorphic settings, mine waste or old insulation at historic sites, and dusty core sheds when fibrous minerals are present.
