Hydrofluoric Acid Safety identification and geology
Hydrofluoric acid HF is used in some geochemistry and mineral prep work. HF is dangerous because it can cause deep tissue damage and can disrupt body calcium levels. Burns may not hurt right away, which can delay treatment. Only trained staff should handle HF, with strict lab controls and a written procedure. Calcium gluconate gel must be available as part of first aid, and emergency wash stations must be close. Do list: Use HF only with documented training and supervision, Keep calcium gluconate gel and an HF first-aid plan on hand, Work in a fume hood with splash protection, Use secondary containment and clearly label all HF containers, Never work alone when using HF. Dont list: Do not use HF without training and a written SOP, Do not rely on pain level to judge severity, Do not use HF outside designated lab areas, Do not use incompatible gloves or containers, Do not delay medical care after exposure. First aid: Immediately flush the area with running water for at least 15 minutes and remove contaminated clothing while flushing. Call emergency services and follow site HF exposure protocol. Apply calcium gluconate gel to skin exposure as instructed by the site procedure while arranging urgent medical care.. Regulations: Follow institutional lab safety requirements, WHMIS/SDS, and hazard communication rules. HF work should follow a written SOP and supervision by the lab safety program. Where applicable, refer to OSHA HazCom and relevant chemical safety standards.. Hazard level: critical. Ppe required: HF-resistant gloves as specified by SDS, chemical splash goggles, face shield, acid-resistant apron, closed-toe shoes.
