PPE for Geologists identification and geology
Personal protective equipment PPE reduces risk from common field hazards like rock chips, dust, sharp edges, noise, sun, and chemicals. PPE also helps stop carry-home exposure, where dust on clothing and boots ends up in vehicles and homes. Many injuries happen during routine tasks, not big incidents, so basic PPE matters every day. PPE works best when it fits and when it matches the hazard. Respirators must be selected for the hazard and also fit-tested to work as intended. This guidance is educational and is not a substitute for your employer's or site's safety training and rules. Do list: Do a task-based hazard check before work, Wear eye protection when handling rock, core, and tools, Use gloves that match the hazard cut-resistant, chemical, etc., Keep spare PPE in the truck and core shack, Clean or change PPE to avoid carry-home dust. Dont list: Do not rely on sunglasses as safety glasses, Do not use damaged helmets, cracked lenses, or torn gloves, Do not wear a respirator without fit and seal checks, Do not remove PPE in active work zones, Do not keep contaminated PPE with food or drinking water. First aid: If an incident occurs, make the area safe first. Treat the injury control bleeding, flush eyes/skin with clean water if exposed . Report to the supervisor and get medical help when needed.. Regulations: Follow employer/site PPE program and required training. Refer to WHMIS Canada , CSA standards e.g., eye/face and respirators , provincial OHS rules, and where applicable OSHA/MSHA requirements.. Hazard level: moderate. Ppe required: hard hat, CSA-approved safety glasses, high-visibility vest, steel-toe boots, work gloves. Common geological settings: Daily field mapping, core logging, sampling, outcrop work, core sheds, and any site with moving equipment, overhead hazards, or dust.
