Mercury Minerals identification and geology
Mercury exposure can occur by breathing vapour or by contact with contaminated dust. Some mercury-bearing minerals can release mercury if heated, crushed, or mishandled. Small spills of elemental mercury can also create long-lasting vapour in indoor spaces if not cleaned correctly. Prevent exposure by avoiding heat, controlling dust, and keeping mercury materials sealed. Use proper PPE and follow spill procedures. Do list: Keep mercury specimens sealed and clearly labeled, Use spill kits designed for mercury when needed, Use local ventilation when handling mercury sources indoors, Wash hands and avoid touching face during handling, Dispose of mercury waste through approved channels. Dont list: Do not heat mercury-bearing specimens, Do not vacuum mercury spills with a standard vacuum, Do not sweep mercury beads into drains, Do not store mercury samples in living quarters, Do not handle mercury without knowing the SDS and site rules. First aid: Move to fresh air if vapours are suspected. If on skin, wash with soap and water. If in eyes, flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical care if symptoms occur headache, nausea, tremor . For spills, isolate the area and follow spill kit procedures.. Regulations: Follow WHMIS/SDS and employer mercury spill procedures. Where applicable, refer to OSHA/MSHA chemical exposure rules and any provincial environmental requirements for mercury waste.. Hazard level: high. Ppe required: chemical safety goggles, nitrile gloves, fit-tested respirator with appropriate cartridges if vapour risk, lab coat or coveralls. Common geological settings: Cinnabar or mercury-bearing specimens, historic mine areas, indoor core shacks, and labs where mercury thermometers or devices may be present.
